Giving Back

Entrepreneurism is inversely proportional to my own love (cough, cough) of self-promotion. But, when something good is going on, people need to know. You people. Anybody-who-reads-this people, or others with whom you might share.

This morning I wrote a check to send to Toldos Pa' Mi Gente in Puerto Rico, from the sales of the Maria books (above). TPMG is a grassroots organization formed shortly after Hurricane Maria landed on the island last September. Their focus is to provide tarps and other related materials that will serve as roofing for people's homes while they await repairs. Even seven months after the storm, folks on the island are still having to deal with challenges caused by the storm's destruction.

If the reason I began to write stories was to better serve the students I was teaching, it has now also become to tell stories that need to be told. Maria Maria/María María is not a true story, but rather one I created to shed light on the plight of Puerto Ricans, all while providing a small glimpse into the island's culture.

To all of you who purchased a book, shared my link or even began a conversation about what's going on there still, thank you. It gave me great pleasure to mail that check today, and I couldn't have done it by myself. Mil gracias.
